Meet the Gang - The Smallprint Company
The Smallprint Company
1) Who you are?
We are husband and wife Hannah & Chris Barker. We established The Smallprint Co about 6 years ago and have dedicated ourselves to preserving, educating and creating, all in the name of letterpress, ever since!
2) What you do?
We have three approaches to the studio:
i) we hand print letterpress stationery, cards, commissions, wedding stationery and decorative bound books.
ii) We run workshops on and off-site
ii) We host regular exhibitions in our Gallery Space
3) What is your favourite print?
Hannah: it has to be the Shakespeare print commissioned by the Bodleian.
4) What inspires you?
We love language and Victorian printed ephemera and take inspiration from around us experimenting with vintage type and beautiful papers.
5) How the cards and prints are made?
Chris trials an idea in moveable type, inking it up on the proofing press to get the composition just right. When he's happy, he arranges the type in a chase - a kind of metal frame and locks it into place. When it's secure he places it into the press - often he uses the Adana 8x5, a tabletop press - inks up the disc and then prints each card individually. If the design has 2 or more colours, he has to repeat this process, building up the design.
6) Workshops etc...
We run several workshops in letterpress and decorative bookbinding from the studio and we can also travel to other venues. We have a range of pre-scheduled workshops online and anyone looking for a bespoke workshop either for a project, a group or a particular time can get in touch. We also run parties for adults and children which are always great fun!
